Chrome OS Takes Google Head to Head with Apple Not Microsoft

There is an interesting analysis, over at Gaj-IT.com, of the impact that Google’s new Chrome OS, which is rumoured to be released this week, will have for Apple and Microsoft.

Google is trying to repeat its success with Android on smart-phones with Chrome OS on Wi-Fi and 3G enabled netbooks. Google are clever enough to know that they can’t unseat Microsoft from their dominant position on the desktop but Google doesn’t really need to.

Google has announced a new feature from the Google Labs which builds search results into a table like in a spreadsheet.

If you want a list of all the capital cities in Europe you can enter a query like ‘capital cities in Europe’ and Google Squared will build a spreadsheet like results page where you can add rows and columns and build up a table of your results.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has unveiled Microsoft’s new Bing search tool on the last day of D7.

Bing search (www.bing.com) will not launch publicly until June 3 but the D7 audience got a nice overview of some of the features from the audience.

The results page shows the best match at the top. Similar to Ask.com and the new Wolfram Alpha search engine, if you type in a simple question an “instant answer” will appear.

As part of the demo, Steve also searched for an American Airlines flight number. The top field on …

If you live outside the US and love listening to online radio, you might remember Pandora, probably the greatest free online service where you can listen and tune your music to your taste. Well, as Pandora is now only streaming to US-based listeners, what are people outside to do? Head to globalPandora, where you can listen to it without a problem (at least for a while, because we’re certain the site will be *nicely* asked to cease, although now that it’s proved possible, similar ones will pop-up soon).
We have tested …

Got an e-mail in my inbox this morning from Pandora with the thing all UK-based users of this service have feared: Pandora will stop streaming to the UK as of January 15th. They have been forced to isolate everyone except the UK for a while, in hopes they might still be able to work out a deal. I guess it did not work out.
Oh well, there’s always Last.fm or HotSpot Shield. Yeah, you read me right! While it’s been intended as a protection over your wireless connection, HotSpot creates “a …

Mac OS X Leopard comes with a built-in web server (Apache) and with PHP version 5 (5.2.4 to be precise). This makes OS X a great web development platform out of the box and it comes. While there are 3rd party Apache/PHP/MySQL packages like MAMP, XAMP it isn’t hard to get the native PHP and Apache working.
There is a great article on this here.

Seems Google’s on a roll to give gifts to good nerd-kiddies this season, and they started early. Following the recent Gmail storage space increase, now we get the long-awaited IMAP support. The support pages have been updated and although not everyone has the feature yet, I am sure it won’t be too long. This is obviously a lot better than POP3 as you don’t have to sync mail all the time, and if you say move an e-mail into a folder in Outlook, it also gets labeled in Gmail, the …

I can finally relax (for a while at least). My Gmail account had reached 98% at one point and e-mails kept coming in, I had to delete my old ‘has:attachment’ e-mails. If you’re in the same situation, you can stop and catch your breath. Gmail is speeding up their storage increase counter to offer more space for regular users as well as those part of the Web Apps program.
Paid subscribers also get a much larger increase (probably by about 10 Gb or so). This is nice and with Yahoo offering …

Everyone hosted on Layered Tech’s network, you better rush to your site / server and change your root password! According to this post by LayeredTech president, Todd Abrams, “the support database was a target of malicious activity on the evening of 9/17/2007 that may have involved the illegal downloading of information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and server login details for 5 to 6,000 of our clients.”
I am not sure all clients hosted on their network are following their blog, where they post every downtime, maintenance, news, …
