Free AVG Anti-Virus Pro Download Swamps Servers
Following a post on downloadsquad that Computeract!ve is giving away free licensed copies of AVG Anti-Virus Pro through Jan 17, 2008, Computeract!ve are now reporting that they are experiencing severe server download problems.
“We are experiencing severe disruption to our downloads server after this offer was leaked to other internet users. We’re working to fix the problem – if you can’t access the file, please try again later.”
CyberNet has pointed us to a couple of mirrors. But when the Hi-Tech Squad tried downloading from them we discovered that one was removed and the other was similarly overwhelmed.
What is the moral of this story… Don’t try and give away free copies of a top anti-virus suite in secret and don’t expect “the internet” to find out.
PayPal Says Linux is Good; Know-it-all Web User Says Otherwise
There is a great article and interview over at Information Week where the manager of PayPal’s payment system talks about how Linux is being used to power their entire electronic payment processing system.
This Linux system is currently processing $1,571 worth of transactions per second in 17 different currencies. In 2006, the online payments firm, which started out over a bakery in Palo Alto, processed a total of $37.6 billion in transactions. It’s headed toward $50 billion this year.
User comments to the article are interesting with a couple of users mentioning that their faith in PayPal has now decreased now that they know they are using Linux. Buy one witty user replies “I guess eBay, Google, and PayPal don’t know what they’re doing technology-wise. Perhaps both of you should fill out job applications with them and straighten them out.

Asus EeePc available on the Romanian market!
This one came in the mailbox, the post_mail_box, of course. Mediagalaxy included this cutie in their latest advertisement paper. We’ve been watching it for a while, now that it’s here it seems unbelievable! Intel Mobile 900MHz, 512MB DDR2, 4GB storage, webcam, Wlan, card reader, built-in speakers and mike. It comes with Linux and – this one made me giggle – is Windows XP compatible! It is sold as being the lightest laptop (in Romania perhaps), only weighing 0,9 kg. Now all we have to do is go and get one before they run out of stock. Oh, did we mention the price yet? It’s 1149 RON, that would’nt be cheap at all compared to the initially vehiculated price tag of $200. Conversion gives 329EUR or $478, and one can pay off in monthly rates of less than 10 EUR, but by the time you are done maybe no one remembers what the EeePc was…
