There has been lots of speculation over the weekend about an up coming Apple Mac model called the Mac Nano. In brief the Mac Nano is supposed to be a smaller version of the Mac Mini. The original post on macosrumors.com said that the machine would as small in the horizontal as an internal optical drive will allow, and a little over 2/3 the height. However contradicting this the xyhd.tv site show an “exclusive” picture of the Mac Nano without any optical drive at all. The xyhd.tv goes on to reason that Apple would release a new Blu-Ray/DVD/CD external drive.
A personal computer without a floppy was made possible by Apple with the iMac… But a Mac without a optical drive is kind of dumb. Apple is popular for mulitmedia and design. Apple created FireWire (the standard for talking to video cameras), one of Apple keys selling points of the Mac is the iLife software suite. What is the point of a Mac where you can create your home movies and then NOT burn them onto a DVD.
Apple may well have a new design for the Mac Mini, it may well be smaller (as actually there is a lot of waste space inside the Mac Mini), it may well replace the Mac Mini, but it certainly does not drop the optical drive.
No, its a very good idea. My girlfriend would kill for a Mac in the size of Sony’s smallest ones. She even consider leaving Mac for the VAIO. The smaller size is very important for the group of people that always are on the go. Burning DVD’s not important, the lifeline is a big memory stick. I on the other hand is working with video production and want a 20 inch MacBook Pro and DVD burning.
Anyways, a MacBook Nano would do very well on the market.
Stan,
I understand your point, but I don’t think the rumors are about a MacBook Nano but rather a desktop machine similar to the Mac Mini but smaller.
