Not working in IT, though being interested in technology, obviously there was no way to avoid alternative OSs, and trying out Linux was the thing to do. But where do you go from there? There is almost a distro for every imaginable task / taste. Do I want commercial Linux for my business? Maybe I’m more into desktop usage? Do I prefer to fight the fight of dependencies of .rpm based systems, or do I want to go the Debian way?
I know what I want to run on my Laptop: a fast Linux, not based on .rpms, as up-to-date as possible, top hardware recognition and as fast as possible. Oh, and alongside an office suite and the regular browsing, chatting, emailing tools, I want to be able to develop websites with the LAMP stack, manage my music and my photos, listen to and watch them, burn them on my media, use wireless connection, run 3D apps and why not show off with the most amazing eyecandy… I know that is not simple but I found what I was looking for: sidux.
Based on the “unstable” branch of Debian GNU/Linux, AKA “sid” the developers strive to do the impossible: make the unstable stable. Running as a live CD, though offering an easy to handle HD installer, sidux convinces through speed, excellent hardware recognition and an amazing piece of software: h2′s script called “smxi” that takes care of updating the system even daily if you want, using the well known apt tool to do the job. Yes, kernel-updates are included! Now, that is what you can call fun. Have a look for yourselves at www.sidux.com.
